Cowdenbeath 2-1 Brechin City
Veteran Cowdenbeath goalkeeper John Martin rolled back the years to help his side secure promotion to the Second Division at the visitors' expense.
Martin, 42 , denied Brechin with three breathtaking stops from Roddy Grant, Kevin Fotheringham and Blair Sturrock as the home goal came under attack.
And his efforts finally paid off when Craig Winter headed home a stoppage-time winner to spark scenes of joy at Central Park.
For much of the first half, Brechin - needing a win to clinch promotion - looked the more accomplished outfit, but failed to take the chances they created. In the end, they were punished when the hosts broke the deadlock three minutes before the break.
Graeme Brown swung over a deep cross from the right and, with Brechin's central defence napping, Murray Hunter headed on to the crossbar, before the unmarked Tommy King side-footed the rebound beyond Derek Soutar.
As the tension mounted late in the game, Brechin equalised with two minutes remaining when Daryn Smith scored following a goalmouth scramble.
Brechin still needed a second, but over-committed themselves in the push forward, allowing Winter to nip in behind the defence and head home McDowell's pin-point cross.
Manager Gary Kirk paid tribute to his players, and in particular, to the performance of Martin.
'Our goalkeeper was brilliant today, but he's done this all season,' he said. 'All my players kept their nerve and we deserve this.'
For Brechin's Dick Campbell, however, it was a very different story. He said: 'I'm gutted. We had a fantastic season, and to fail to be promoted with 72 points is just unbelievable.
'Their goalkeeper was astonishing, but we had enough chances to win the game, so we've only ourselves to blame.'
Meanwhile, Hamilton, who sealed promotion in midweek, clinched the Third Division title with a 4-1 win over Montrose - then sent a message to the Scottish League.
David McFarlane hit a hat- trick and Michael Moore added the fourth before Accies - relegated last year after being docked 15 points for missing a game during a player strike - donned T-Shirts with the message 'Not by 15 points, but by enough' as they stepped up to receive their medals from League secretary Peter Donald.
At the other end of the table, basement side Elgin finished their season with a 1-0 win over Albion Rovers.
