McDowall, who scored two in the 3- 0 win over East Stirling, impressed in a training week with the Tynecastle club, but manager Craig Levein confirmed yesterday: 'Hearts are keen to sign him but at the moment it seems they cannot afford him.'
Brechin were stunned when Elgin grabbed an equaliser four minutes into injury time to share the points in a 1-1 draw.
Hamilton sub Gary Clark had an action packed day as he gave away a penalty, then scored his side's late winner in a 3-2 win over Dumb-arton.
